Hugo Broos Reflects on Bafana Bafana’s AFCON Exit After Cameroon Defeat

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has spoken candidly after South Africa’s 2 to 1 loss to Cameroon in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 on Sunday night. The defeat ended Bafana’s tournament run despite a strong opening spell that suggested a different outcome was possible.

South Africa began the match with intensity and control. They created several clear chances in the opening stages and looked capable of taking command. The failure to convert those opportunities proved decisive as Cameroon punished Bafana for their missed chances.

Broos believes the match could have been settled early. He felt an opening goal would have changed everything. He pointed to a moment of misfortune that led to Cameroon’s opener just before halftime.

“I think we started very well in the game where we had chances to score. I think if we score then we can never lose the game but ok. Then, we had a little bit unluck with the corner, the player shoots he his blocked, it falls again at the feet of player, he shoots and score for the 1 to 0,” Broos told SABC Sport.

Cameroon went into the break with the lead and returned with greater urgency. They struck again shortly after the restart which placed Bafana under severe pressure. The second goal forced South Africa to chase the game against an experienced and disciplined opponent.

Broos explained that the plan at halftime was to push harder and commit numbers forward. That approach became riskier after conceding early in the second half.

“But I was happy with what we brought in the first half so we thought to go all in the second and then after a few minutes in the second half we concede a second goal,” he said.

“And then that’s a little bit a pity because we now had to score two goals. Even then we had the chances to score those two goals and have a draw, but it was not our day today.”

Bafana continued to fight and refused to fold. Substitute Evidence Makgopa gave the team hope with a late goal. The strike came in the final minutes and sparked a frantic push for an equaliser. Broos felt that if the goal had arrived earlier the outcome might have been different.

“You know, after halftime you get a second goal so quickly then that cuts the legs in the way of speaking and then we went on and fight for it, we had chances, we could’ve scored earlier 2 to 1 and then get the 2 to 2 and you saw what happened in the last ten minutes,” he added.

In the closing stages South Africa relied on long balls as Cameroon defended deep and protected their lead with composure. The Indomitable Lions managed the game well and saw out the result.

“We just kicked the ball in front and they defended well and ok it’s a disappointed certainly for everyone of us but I can’t be unhappy with the game we played today,” Broos said.

The defeat is a painful one for Bafana Bafana who showed growth and courage during the tournament. Despite the early exit the performance against Cameroon highlighted progress under Broos and reinforced belief in the team’s direction. The focus now shifts to learning from missed opportunities and building consistency ahead of future international competitions.
