Kaizer Chiefs Legends Look Forward To 100th Soweto Derby! Sunday 21 March 2021 will see the 100th Soweto Derby league fixture.
The match is taking place at the iconic FNB Stadium in Nasrec. An ideal location for such an auspicious occasion.
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Marks “Go Man Go” Maponyane insists that modern players have a technological benefit that players of his generations simply didn’t have.
“Players have it easy these days, as the team’s video analyst will tell them about their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.” Maponyane tells the club.
“I did that myself, going for example to the stadium on a Friday night to watch a game and analyse the defenders. If their defender was left-footed, I would slip the ball over his right-foot to go past him. I read the weakness of opposing defenders and knew how to expose it,” he says.
Another player to have played for both Soweto Giants was Jerry Sadike. He was part of an iconic Kaizer Chiefs team that included the likes of Ace Ntsoelengoe.
He hails from Orlando East, alongside the mountainous Kaizer Motaung.
“That team could have been the national team, we were so good. We could score and score and score,” Sadike says.
“Me and Kaizer both of course came from Orlando East. The fans end up not talking to you at all around the time of the Derby. The butterflies in the stomach are overwhelming…until you touch the ball,” he adds on.
Orlando Pirates are the much fancied team going into this classic encounter. The Buccaneers are on a good run of form and are third in the league table.
They defeated Enyimba FC of Nigeria 2-1 in the CAF Confederations Cup on Wednesday. Kaizer Chiefs drew 0-0 with Petro Luanda in Angola.
