Al Ahly Legend Opposes Pitso Mosimane Return

Former Al Ahly star Ahmad Bilal has voiced strong opposition to the possible reappointment of Pitso Mosimane as the club’s head coach. The Egyptian giants recently parted ways with Jose Riveiro after just three months and seven matches in charge, following a 2-0 defeat to title rivals Pyramids FC.
Mosimane, who managed Al Ahly from 2020 to 2022, is widely regarded as one of the club’s most successful coaches. During his tenure, he led the Red Devils to their first CAF Champions League title in seven years, won six trophies in total, and achieved back-to-back third-place finishes at the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite this record, Bilal remains unconvinced about his return.
“I am against Pitso Mosimane’s return, and I was against Ribeiro’s selection. I do not support the idea of looking for a coach who works in African teams, because they are all inferior to Al Ahly,” Bilal told Kooora.
Bilal emphasized that Al Ahly needs a manager with a proven track record who can be accountable from the start. “I hope to wait until a technical director is chosen who knows everything, and that he comes during the break so that he can be held accountable in the event of a stumbling block. Big teams cannot tolerate failed attempts by coaches, and big teams cannot tolerate more than three failures,” he added.
The club is reportedly considering high-profile names, including former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, alongside Mosimane. Bilal’s comments underline a growing debate among fans and former players about whether Al Ahly should prioritize experience at the highest European level over proven success within African football.
The decision on the next head coach will be closely watched, as Al Ahly aims to maintain its status as the dominant force in Egyptian and African football.
