Bafana Bafana Claim R500 000 Prize Money After Winning the 2021 COSAFA Cup! The South African national team won their first piece of silverware in some years yesterday.
Bafana Bafana celebrated Mandela Day in fine fashion. They defeated competition visitors Senegal 5-4 on penalties to claim the COSAFA Cup.
This was the first Cosafa final to be decided on penalties since 2007, when South Africa won the tournament once again. The 2021 triumph is their 5th title.
The game itself ended 0-0 after normal time and had to be decided on penalties. The spot kicks were perfect until AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa was the hero of the day.
The Bafana Bafana captain for the COSAFA Cup saved from Dominique Mendy.
This COSAFA Cup title is Bafana Bafana’s first piece of silverware since winning the competition in 2016.
Veli Mothwa, Victor Letsoalo and Siyethemba Sithebe all won individual honours in the competition as well.
“The Player of the Tournament was named as South Africa’s Siyethemba Sithebe, the experienced AmaZulu midfielder, while the Golden Boot went to South Africa’s Victor Letsoalo.” COSAFA announced after the competition ceased.
“Another Bafana Bafana player, Veli Mothwa, was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament after he went five games without conceding a goal. The individuals all won R20,000. Eswatini won the Fair Play award
“Meanwhile, South Africa will receive R500,000 in prizemoney for their win, while Senegal earn R250,000. Eswatini picked up R150,000 for winning the bronze medal and Mozambique go home with R100,000.”
