Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos Outlines Role for AFCON Standby Players

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has detailed his expectations for the three players named on standby for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which runs from 21 December to 18 January. South Africa will open their campaign against Angola on 22 December.
Broos announced his final 25-man squad on Monday, largely relying on experienced players while including younger talent such as Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Samukelo Kabini, Khulumani Ndamane, and Mohau Nkota. The AFCON regulations allow teams to name three additional players on standby, who can be called up during the tournament in the event of injury or other issues.
For South Africa, the standby players are Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala, Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Iqraam Rayners, and Stellenbosch FC defender Thabo Moloisane. Speaking to SABC Sport, Broos stressed the importance of their readiness.
“We need players who understand that if an injury or issue arises, we can rely on them,” said Broos. “They must stay in shape, train regularly, and be prepared. I selected three players to stand by rather than include them in camp to keep daily training manageable with the main squad.”
Broos added that while he hopes the standby players will not be needed, he wants them fully prepared to travel to Morocco if circumstances demand. The 73-year-old coach emphasized that their role is vital for squad depth and tournament readiness.
Bafana Bafana will begin preparations in Pretoria on Monday, with the squad reporting for camp, except for Orlando Pirates players participating in the Carling Knockout final this weekend. Broos’ structured approach aims to balance fitness, focus, and flexibility as South Africa targets a strong showing in the AFCON tournament.
