Italy defeated lowly Malta 2-0 in their UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifier. They have now won their first match and will look to build on these three points.

The Italians lost 2-1 at home to England in their first match, meaning that they needed a win to kickstart their campaign. Striker Mateo Retegui scored to open the scoring before Matteo Pessina added another in the first half to round off the scoring in the encounter.

“These are games where you have everything to lose, and they tend to be ugly.” Head coach Roberto Mancini told RAI Sport after the win.

“We did some things well, others less so, the important thing was to win. We broke the deadlock early and could’ve scored more, but these matches can be strange.

“We could’ve done everything better, that’s for sure. When you are 2-0 up, you have the chance to play with less pressure and we should’ve made more of that,”
