Bongani Zungu Reflects on His Struggles at Sundowns and Embraces a New Start at AmaZulu

Newly signed AmaZulu FC midfielder Bongani Zungu has opened up about the challenges that hindered him from reaching his full potential during his return to Mamelodi Sundowns. Speaking at AmaZulu’s Media Open Day ahead of their Christmas Eve clash against Sundowns, Zungu candidly shared insights into his mental and physical struggles during his second spell at the Chloorkop-based club.

A Rocky Return from Europe

Zungu’s career faced significant setbacks following his tumultuous loan spell at Rangers in 2020. The Duduza-born midfielder was one of five players suspended for breaching COVID-19 curfew regulations, an incident that effectively ended his chances of securing a permanent deal with the Scottish giants under then-manager Steven Gerrard.

After returning to his parent club, French side Amiens, Zungu found himself sidelined as the team had been relegated from Ligue 1. Compounding his challenges, issues with weight gain saw him relegated to the reserve squad. Only in the final six months of his contract did Zungu regain his place in the first team, but by then, his future in Europe was uncertain.

In 2022, Sundowns re-signed Zungu, offering him a chance to reignite his career. However, his return was marred by fitness concerns, with coach Rulani Mokwena excluding him from the squad until he addressed his physical condition.

Mental Health Struggles at Sundowns

Reflecting on his time at Sundowns, Zungu admitted that his mental state played a significant role in his underwhelming performances.

“I mentioned the importance of being happy. During my time at Sundowns, I don’t think I was in a good mental state. That affected my performance because footballers are human beings—we need to be happy with ourselves first,” Zungu explained.

While acknowledging the support he received from Sundowns, Zungu suggested that his personal struggles prevented him from living up to the “Ben 10” persona that fans had come to admire during his earlier years.

“I can give you a hundred reasons why I didn’t reach my best, but for me, it was on me personally, mentally. Maybe that’s why I didn’t perform to my potential. Right now, though, I’m in a great mental space, and I’m happy to be at AmaZulu.”

A Fresh Start at AmaZulu

Now at AmaZulu, Zungu is optimistic about the future. The 32-year-old expressed gratitude to Sundowns for their role in his career but is fully focused on making an impact at his new club.

“I’m very happy to be at AmaZulu. This is a new challenge for me, and I can’t wait to get started. I’ll always be grateful to Sundowns and the President, but I’m ready to move forward,” he added.

What’s Next for Zungu?

As AmaZulu look to climb the DStv Premiership table, Zungu’s experience and skill will be vital for the Durban-based side. Fans and teammates alike will be hoping that his renewed mental clarity and happiness translate into stellar performances on the pitch.

For Zungu, this fresh start offers a chance to reclaim his place among South Africa’s top footballers and prove that setbacks can pave the way for remarkable comebacks.
