Bradley Cross Embraces Competition at Left-Back After Lessons from Last Season

Kaizer Chiefs defender Bradley Cross has reflected on last season’s challenges while embracing the competition he faces at left-back this campaign. Chiefs started last season strongly, winning their opening two league matches against Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC, mirroring their perfect start this season. However, the team’s form dipped, earning only one point from the next three games and finishing ninth, 41 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

“It has been a good start for us with two wins,” Cross said. “I think we just have to stay grounded because there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Like I said, last season we got a bit overexcited when we started off, but I think we have learnt from that. We have said to each other that let us take every game step by step, one game at a time.”

Cross highlighted the positive effect of competition within the squad. Chiefs currently have Nkanyiso Shinga and Paseka Mako also capable of playing at left-back.

“Firstly, for me, I think having competition is good. You improve and don’t get complacent. So, having the guys in the same position helps me improve. It is also good for the squad depth,” he explained.

He also welcomed constructive criticism as a way to grow as a player. “It is normal to receive constructive criticism. I think it helps me to improve. To help the team go forward, I need to improve whether I make mistakes or not. There is also healthy competition in that position.”

Cross’ approach reflects a disciplined mindset as Chiefs aim to maintain consistency after a strong start this season. With the left-back position competitive, Cross is focused on steady development, ensuring he contributes fully to the squad’s objectives.
