Brighton Mhlongo Calls for Realistic Expectations Ahead of Bafana Bafana AFCON Campaign

Former South Africa international goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo has urged fans and the public to manage their expectations of Bafana Bafana ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. He believes the current optimism, while understandable, could place unnecessary pressure on the squad. His message is clear. Support the team, but stay realistic.

Bafana Bafana have been drawn into a demanding Group B alongside Egypt, Angola and Zimbabwe. Their opening match is against Angola on Monday evening. The group offers no easy fixtures and every point will matter from the start.

South Africa arrive at the tournament on the back of a strong bronze medal finish at the 2023 AFCON. That performance raised belief across the country. Many supporters now expect the team to reach the final or even lift the trophy. Mhlongo feels those expectations may be premature.

Speaking on The Carwash Podcast, the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper said ambition is important, but it must be handled carefully. He explained that public statements and hype can easily be misinterpreted. When results do not follow, the backlash often lands on players and coaches.

Mhlongo pointed to global examples to underline his warning. Spain dominated world football in 2010, then struggled in the following tournaments. Italy and France also failed to build on previous success. Germany won the 2014 World Cup in style, then exited early in 2018. His point was simple. Success in one tournament offers no guarantees in the next.

He stressed that African football is especially unpredictable. Teams adapt quickly. Opponents study each other closely. With AFCON coming soon after other major competitions, form can change fast. Small margins decide games.

Mhlongo also highlighted the difficulty of Bafana’s group. Angola bring physical strength and intensity. Zimbabwe thrive on disrupting stronger opponents. Egypt remain a heavyweight with history and motivation, especially after past encounters with South Africa. He believes assuming group qualification is automatic ignores these realities.

According to Mhlongo, all these factors combine to create unwanted pressure around the team. That pressure can affect performances if expectations spiral too high. He feels pride in qualification should be the foundation, not an assumption of silverware.

He urged fans to back the team with balance. Focus on effort, discipline and progress. Take each match as it comes. For Mhlongo, that approach gives Bafana Bafana the best chance to compete with clarity and confidence on the AFCON stage.
