Simba SC’s Appointment of Steve Barker Months in the Making

Simba SC’s decision to appoint Steve Barker as their new head coach was the result of months of careful consideration, with insiders revealing that the Tanzanian giants had been tracking the South African mentor well before finalising the deal.

Sources indicate that Barker first drew Simba’s attention during last season’s CAF Confederation Cup, when his Stellenbosch FC side faced the Dar es Salaam-based club. It was Stellenbosch’s maiden continental campaign, and Barker’s tactical acumen, organisation, and composed leadership over the two-legged tie reportedly left a strong impression on Simba’s technical staff.

“Simba were impressed with how Stellenbosch conducted themselves in the Confederation Cup and how Barker set his team up. From there, his name stayed in discussions internally, and when the opportunity presented itself, they moved decisively,” an insider told the Siya crew. The club continued to monitor Barker’s progress in domestic competitions, noting Stellenbosch’s consistency in the Betway Premiership despite operating with a limited budget and regularly losing key players.

Barker’s departure ends a highly successful six-year tenure at Stellenbosch. During his spell, he transformed the club into a respected top-flight outfit, secured continental football qualification, and delivered historic milestones for the Cape Winelands side. Despite the career advancement, Barker admitted that leaving a club he helped build was not an easy choice.

“It is a bittersweet decision, but I feel the time is right for Stellenbosch to enter a new era with someone else at the helm, and I can only wish the Club continued success in the future,” Barker said.

The former AmaZulu and University of Pretoria coach also acknowledged the professional challenge that Simba presents. Leading one of Africa’s most prominent clubs offers him the chance to grow and test his abilities at a higher level. “I believe that taking up a new and exciting challenge at one of the biggest clubs on the continent is something I need to pursue to further my own personal growth and ambitions as a coach, and I’m grateful that my time with Stellenbosch has helped open that door,” he added.

Simba SC’s measured approach in securing Barker demonstrates their strategic planning, ensuring they bring in a coach whose philosophy and track record align with the club’s long-term ambitions. With Barker at the helm, the Tanzanian powerhouse aims to strengthen its domestic dominance and make a stronger impact in continental competitions.
