Deon Hotto Gears Up for His Sixth Season at Orlando Pirates with New Coach to Impress

Deon Hotto is entering his sixth campaign with Orlando Pirates, and while the seasons have changed and coaches have come and gone, one thing has remained constant: his immense value to the team. Now, as Abdeslam Ouaddou steps into the technical area, Hotto faces a familiar but critical challenge—earning the trust of yet another new head coach.

The Namibian international has been a model of consistency and endurance since joining the Soweto giants from Bidvest Wits five years ago. As of now, Hotto has already racked up 215 appearances for the Buccaneers, putting him well on course to hit the 300 mark before his contract runs out in June 2027.

From the moment he arrived, Hotto has proven indispensable. His debut season under then-coach Josef Zinnbauer saw him play a staggering 45 matches. The German tactician placed immense trust in the left-footer, and Hotto repaid him with reliable performances week in and week out.

The trend didn’t change under the co-coaching duo of Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids in the 2021/22 season. Once again, Hotto led the appearance tally with 44 games, cementing his place as one of the club’s most durable assets.

When Spaniard Jose Riveiro took over, Hotto’s role remained just as vital. He featured in 36 matches during Riveiro’s first season, followed by 41 the next, and then added an impressive 46 appearances in the most recent campaign. Even after Riveiro’s departure, Hotto featured in three of the last four matches overseen by Ncikazi, finishing the season with a total of 4,300 minutes played.

This level of consistency is unmatched. Since arriving at Pirates, Hotto has featured in 93% of all games played by the club—an astounding statistic that underscores just how crucial he has been through multiple tactical systems and coaching ideologies.

Now aged 34, and turning 35 in October, Hotto isn’t just another squad player—he’s a veteran leader with a proven record of professionalism, fitness, and tactical adaptability. The onus is now on new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou to decide whether the Namibian will remain a key cog in his plans.

Given Hotto’s ability to seamlessly transition between different coaches and consistently deliver performances, it would be no surprise if he wins over Ouaddou just as he has done with every other coach during his time in black and white.

With another season ahead, a new coach to impress, and the milestone of 300 games within reach, Deon Hotto’s Orlando Pirates journey is far from over—and if history is anything to go by, he’ll be right at the heart of things once again.
