Aden McCarthy Criticised After Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has come under intense scrutiny following the club’s 1-0 loss to Angolan side Kabuscorp in the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup last weekend in Luanda.

The match ended in disappointment for Chiefs, who conceded the only goal through Julio Matondo despite Kabuscorp finishing with 10 men after Jorge was sent off. Fans and pundits alike did not anticipate the result, placing added pressure on the club’s technical staff.

McCarthy, a versatile defender and Academy graduate, was singled out for his performance, with former Chiefs winger Junior Khanye pointing to positional errors and lapses in focus.

“Very disappointed by this boy McCarthy. His positioning,” Khanye told iDiski Times. “He got the ball. He’s more focused on playing than on his priority, which is defending. They are playing too many players that are not complementing each other. Aden McCarthy and Inácio Miguel, I don’t think they complement each other when it comes to defending. Look at the goal. Poor! Very poor. This boy Aden ball watching as the ball travelled all the way, and there’s somebody behind him; they finish it’s a goal.”

The defeat marked Chiefs’ first competitive match following the exit of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, with interim staff now tasked with stabilising the squad. McCarthy’s performance has prompted questions about whether he should retain his place in the starting XI for upcoming fixtures.

Chiefs face a critical local fixture on Wednesday against Marumo Gallants as they aim to end a three-match winless streak across competitions. The team will then turn attention back to the CAF Confederation Cup, where securing a positive result against Kabuscorp in the return leg will be crucial to advance to the next stage.

The match also highlights broader concerns regarding defensive cohesion at Chiefs, particularly the partnership between McCarthy and Inácio Miguel. The technical team has been urged to reassess player selection and defensive strategies to prevent similar lapses in future matches.

With the season underway, Chiefs will need to address these issues promptly to remain competitive domestically and continentally, and to restore confidence among fans and players alike.
