Gilberto Set for Extended Absence as Orlando Pirates Loan Continues

Angolan winger Gilberto will again not return to Orlando Pirates during the latest transfer window. The decision means he will complete 18 months away from the Soweto giants. Gilberto has been back at Angolan champions Petro de Luanda since the start of 2024. His return followed a difficult spell at Pirates during the first half of the 2024/25 season after arriving on a multi million rand transfer.
Expectations were high when he signed, but his time at the club did not unfold as planned. Under then coach Jose Riveiro, Gilberto made 12 appearances across competitions. He completed a full match only once and struggled to secure a consistent role in the starting lineup.
The lack of game time led to frustration for the winger. In January, he requested a loan move in search of regular football. Orlando Pirates agreed and sanctioned a temporary return to Petro de Luanda. The initial loan was set to run until the end of the season. It was later extended to the end of the year and has now been extended again.
Since rejoining Petro, Gilberto has revived his career. He has already secured his third consecutive Girabola title with the club and is now on course for a fourth. His performances have also helped Petro compete strongly in continental football, with the Angolan side currently leading Group D in the CAF Champions League.
While Gilberto has found stability in Angola, Pirates have moved on in his position. The club recently added Daniel Msendami to bolster the wide attacking areas. He joins a group that already includes Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis, Kamogelo Sebelebele and Tshepang Moremi. All are capable of filling roles on the flanks and contributing consistently.
The depth in those positions reduces the urgency for Gilberto’s return. With competition high and his loan extended, a comeback to Orlando Pirates does not appear imminent. For now, Gilberto remains focused on success with Petro de Luanda. For Pirates, the extended loan closes another chapter in a transfer that promised much but failed to deliver on early expectations.
