Shandre Campbell Sent Off in Club Brugge’s Belgian Cup Defeat to Charleroi

Shandre Campbell’s return to Club Brugge ended in controversy as the South African winger was sent off during the Blue-Blacks’ 2-0 loss to Royal Charleroi SC in the Belgian Cup quarter-final.

Club Brugge were playing their first official match since 26 December, and the game started poorly for the hosts. Charleroi took a 2-0 lead by half-time through two goals from Parfait Guiagon, leaving Brugge chasing the game.

Campbell was introduced in the 86th minute, marking his first appearance since 14 December. Manager Ivan Leko had hoped the 20-year-old would inject energy and creativity as Brugge pushed for a late goal. Instead, the appearance turned into a difficult outing.

The incident occurred after Campbell picked up the ball inside his own half, beat Charleroi’s Jules Gaudin, and began dribbling forward. Gaudin tugged on Campbell’s shirt, earning a free-kick. Campbell reacted by chasing the defender and shoving him to the ground.

The confrontation escalated into a brawl involving multiple Charleroi players. Campbell was shown a red card for inciting the fight. Teammate Christos Tzolis intervened, attempting to protect Campbell and even tried to prevent the referee from sending him off, according to HLN.

Head coach Ivan Leko addressed the incident, admitting he had not witnessed Campbell’s actions but did not condone them. “He’s a young guy who lost control at a difficult moment. You shouldn’t do something like that,” Leko said.

The sending off adds to Club Brugge’s challenges as they prepare for the remainder of the Belgian Cup and league fixtures. Campbell will now face suspension, delaying his full return to competitive action after a month-long absence.
