Joel Masilela Criticizes Bafana Bafana Over Lorch Omission

Former Bafana Bafana winger Joel Masilela has expressed strong concerns over the national team’s decision to continue overlooking Thembinkosi Lorch. The Wydad Athletic Club star has been in impressive form, yet he remains absent from Hugo Broos’ squad.

Bafana Bafana are set to face Zambia in an international friendly at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday. Despite Lorch’s consistent club performances, head coach Broos has maintained that the 32-year-old winger is too old, prioritizing the team’s future with younger players.

Masilela told KickOff that Broos’ approach is short-sighted. “This is sad, but I’m not surprised that Broos is naming his own squad and ignoring some players who are performing well at the club level, and choosing others who aren’t doing as well just because of age,” he said.

Broos has emphasized a long-term strategy since taking charge, giving priority to emerging talent. Masilela points out that this approach could be counterproductive, especially when immediate results are also expected. He noted that younger players like Themba Zwane were similarly overlooked until given a chance.

“What does Broos want to accomplish with young players when his contract isn’t about the future? His contract is about immediate results. The reason we demand so much in this country is because we know we have talent and players. We’ve improved as a nation,” Masilela explained.

He added that coaches should evaluate players based on performance rather than age. “As a head coach, you don’t have to be harsh. Give everyone a chance to fight for their country. What the coach is saying could hurt other players’ careers. Acting stubborn won’t help. The Lorch situation is so sad. The boy has been performing well at his club. There are players who are called up even though they aren’t doing well at club level. Ronaldo and Messi are playing in World Cups despite their age. Messi won the World Cup at his age. You judge a player by their performance, not by age.”

Lorch’s exclusion has sparked debate among fans and former players, highlighting a wider discussion about merit, experience, and the balance between youth and proven ability in South African football.

As Bafana prepare for the friendly against Zambia, the question remains whether performance or long-term planning should determine national team selections. For Masilela, the answer is clear: form and ability must take precedence.
