Jose Riveiro Returns to South Africa After Al Ahly Exit

Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has returned to South Africa, being spotted at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday. The Spaniard, who left the country in May after a successful three-year spell with the Buccaneers, is based in Johannesburg and is expected to make his first public appearance this week at a soccer event hosted by Carling Black Label in Bryanston.
Riveiro’s tenure at Pirates was marked by five trophies and consistent top-flight performances in the Betway Premiership. He left the club at the end of last season before taking up a role at Egyptian giants Al Ahly. His time in Cairo was brief, however, as a series of poor results led to his dismissal in August. During his seven-game stint, he secured only one win.
The 50-year-old tactician left Orlando Pirates on a high note, with his final match seeing a 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Es’godini, in front of a packed stadium. Following the match, Riveiro emphasized his loyalty to the club, stating he would never coach another South African team. “I will never coach any team in South Africa. I am a Buccaneer, and Orlando Pirates is the only team I could have motivation, courage, energy, and heart to coach in South Africa,” he said during his farewell press conference.
Riveiro’s return to the country comes amid speculation about his next career move. With his proven track record in South Africa, many expect the former Pirates coach to remain a key figure in discussions around coaching opportunities both locally and abroad.
