Kaizer Chiefs Confirm Departure of Bongani Sam Without a Competitive Appearance

Kaizer Chiefs have officially parted ways with defender Bongani Sam, the club confirmed on Thursday via their social media platforms. The 28-year-old exits Naturena without registering a single competitive appearance for the Soweto giants.
Sam joined Amakhosi at the beginning of the 2024/25 season, becoming the first signing under newly appointed head coach Nasreddine Nabi. His arrival was seen as a fresh opportunity to revive his career after back-to-back loan spells, first with Maritzburg United—now known as Durban City—and later with Moroka Swallows, where he made 15 appearances in the 2023/24 campaign.
Despite early promise and involvement in pre-season preparations, Sam’s time at Chiefs was ultimately one of frustration. He featured in friendly matches, including the Home of Legends Cup in November, but never broke into the matchday squads for official fixtures throughout the season.
With his contract now terminated, the versatile left-back finds himself back on the market in search of a new club and a chance to reignite his career.
The departure comes as Kaizer Chiefs continue reshaping their squad under Nabi’s leadership. The club is aiming to bounce back from a disappointing season that saw them fail to qualify for the MTN8. As a result, the Glamour Boys will not feature in this weekend’s quarter-final fixtures of the prestigious knockout competition.
As Chiefs push forward with their rebuild, Sam’s quiet exit underscores the competitive nature of securing a spot at one of South Africa’s most storied clubs. For the player, the focus now turns to finding a new home where he can finally get back on the pitch and make the impact he once promised.
