Kaizer Chiefs Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma Looks to CAF Final Experience to Boost Confederation Cup Campaign

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma says memories of the club’s 2020/21 CAF Champions League run will guide them in the current CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The Soweto giants begin their group stage with an away fixture against Al Masry of Egypt at the 27,000-capacity Suez Stadium on Sunday. The squad has received a boost with the return of Given Msimango, Paseka Mako, and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

Bvuma, alongside teammates Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Zitha Kwinika, was part of the squad that reached the CAF Champions League final in 2021. Despite falling 3-0 to Al Ahly during a season complicated by a FIFA player registration ban, Bvuma believes that experience will be invaluable.

“Being back is very exciting. I am lucky enough to have reached a CAF final and remember how sweet the journey was,” Bvuma said. “Yes, we had challenges along the way, but it was a great experience. Playing on the continent gives exposure, which has led to some of our players moving abroad after performing well against top African teams.”

He added that having experienced players like Ngcobo, Khanyisa Mayo, Inacio Miguel, and Lebo Maboe in the squad will strengthen the team.

Bvuma also focused on their upcoming match, highlighting Al Masry’s reputation for determined North African football. He expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to handle the challenge and secure a positive result.

“It is always great to get three points, and that is what we will be aiming for. We don’t want to reach the last round under pressure. It is equally important to ensure we don’t lose our first game, which could put us on the back foot,” Bvuma said.

Amakhosi compete in Group D alongside Al Masry, Zamalek, and ZEZCO United. Their opening performance will set the tone for their Confederation Cup campaign.
