Keletso Makgalwa Reflects on Career Setbacks Before Bafana Bafana Recall

Keletso Makgalwa has opened up about the challenges that stalled his career after a promising start at Mamelodi Sundowns, explaining how injuries and loan spells affected his trajectory before his resurgence at Sekhukhune United.
The winger, known for his agility and sharp attacking instincts, is included in Bafana Bafana’s 23-man squad for Saturday’s international friendly against Zambia.
Before joining Sekhukhune United, Makgalwa played in the Motsepe Foundation Championship for Upington City, having joined them as a free agent in October 2023 following his departure from Sundowns. During his time at Sundowns, he was loaned out for several seasons, including a stint at TS Galaxy, where he struggled to find consistent form.
Speaking at a Bafana press conference in Sandton, Makgalwa reflected on the factors that contributed to the dip in his career. “I’d like to thank the coach (Hugo Broos) for giving me an opportunity to be part of this amazing group. I started very well as a young boy from the Sundowns academy. I played Under-20 World Cup and also the Under-23 AFCON, which qualified for the Olympics,” he said.
He acknowledged that injuries played a major role in slowing his progress. “I think it was a great journey, and you know, sometimes there are injuries in football, so that’s where I struggled, especially after winning the treble with coach Pitso (Mosimane), before he left. Everything was going well, but there were too many setbacks after that, and that’s why I even went out on loan to seek some game-time.”
Makgalwa highlighted the importance of starting fresh at Upington City. “It was not a loan. I terminated my contract with Sundowns because I needed to start afresh. I told myself that one day I want to see myself in the Bafana Bafana team, so I need to work hard and make sure that I come back very strong,” he explained.
Since linking up with Sekhukhune United under coach Babina Noko in July 2024, Makgalwa has been in impressive form, earning recognition for his performances and consistency. His journey from setbacks to national team selection underscores his resilience and determination to return to the top level of South African football.
Makgalwa’s story serves as a reminder that career disruptions, such as injuries and limited opportunities, can be overcome with persistence, hard work, and the right environment. His inclusion in the Bafana squad signals both his revival and the confidence national team management has in his abilities.
