Khanyisa Mayo: Chiefs’ New Loan Signing Could Be a Trump Card, Not a Collins Mbesuma Replacement

An ex-Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach has urged supporters to manage expectations around Khanyisa Mayo, the club’s new loan signing from Algerian side CR Belouizdad. While Mayo scored on his debut in a 1-1 Betway Premiership draw against Marumo Gallants, the former coach stressed he should not be seen as the next Collins Mbesuma.
Farouk Khan, who coached Mayo’s father at Chiefs, said the young forward has potential but requires the right environment to shine. “Khanyisa scored a goal, but he didn’t impress much in terms of overall performance since his time on the pitch was limited,” Khan told KickOff.com. “He wasn’t a regular at his previous club. When Sead Ramovic took over at CR Belouizdad, Mayo didn’t get game-time.”
Khan highlighted Mayo’s strengths as an opportunistic striker who thrives with proper service inside the box. “If Chiefs provide him with enough game-time, we could see something special from Mayo. He is talented and comes from a good background. But it would be unfair to expect him to be another Collins Mbesuma. Mbesuma could navigate past defenders on his own; Mayo needs support to showcase his abilities,” he added.
The Mthatha-born striker differs physically from legends like Mbesuma, Shane McGregor, and Fani Madida. Mayo’s game relies on positioning and finishing rather than brute strength or solo runs past defenders. Khan explained that with the right setup, Mayo could become a valuable asset for Chiefs.
Khan also suggested using Mayo strategically rather than as a starter. “Flavio Da Silva has the physical attributes to pressure defenders but is seen as lacking the scoring touch. It’s a catch-22: which one do you play? Da Silva should start matches, while Mayo comes off the bench. This gives Chiefs a trump card to use when necessary,” he said.
Chiefs will look to integrate Mayo effectively as they prepare for the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup against Kabuscorp of Angola at FNB Stadium on Saturday at 15:00. With proper game-time and tactical use, Mayo could provide crucial goals and depth up front, giving Amakhosi options they lacked last season when they finished ninth in the league.
