Lionel Messi has been a free agent for two months and Barcelona will not renew his contract. This is because the club cannot afford to pay him, despite taking a pay cut.
The financial wellbeing of Barcelona has been atrocious for the past two years. Even now, they cannot officially register the players which they have signed.
“Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of Spanish LaLiga regulations on player registration.” The club confirmed in a statement.
“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
“FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.” The club announced.
The club signed Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, and Eric Garcia as free agents this transfer window. None of these players can be registered in La Liga due to the financial constraints of Barcelona.
