Lucas Radebe revealed that he turned down an offer from Manchester United when he was still the captain of Leeds United. He has cited loyalty as one of his biggest reasons for staying.
Roo is one of the most loved players at Leeds United. His influence is so huge that rock band Kaiser Chiefs, from Leeds, named themselves after Kaizer Chiefs, the first ever team that Radebe played for.
At his peak, he was one of the best defenders playing in Europe, so it made sense that Sir Alex Ferguson had plans to sign him.
“When Man united came looking for me, and I declined,” he told Thomas Mlambo in a SuperSport TV special.
“Sir Alex?” Mlambo asked,
“Yeah, and I declined a move. I thought I will stay here, at Leeds.
“The offer came to the club; I was called in and the manager told me that there’s an offer that they want to accept from the club [Manchester United]. I told them, no thank you, I am happy where I was at Leeds.
“This is the club that introduced me to the Premier League and the people [there] looked after me. And that’s me done. And that’s not the only offer, I had offers from Roma, which I declined because I knew there’s something.
“I wanted to grow with Leeds United and I wanted to achieve with the club.”
