Mamelodi Sundowns Plan to Sign Another International Player

Mamelodi Sundowns FC have confirmed plans to add another international player to their squad following the arrivals of Miguel Reisinho and Nuno Santos. The defending Premier Soccer League champions are known for their appetite for foreign talent, which has been key in helping the team achieve its objectives.

This season, Sundowns have made four signings. Locally, they brought in Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch and Tsiki Ntsabeleng on loan from FC Dallas. Internationally, they added Nuno Santos from Vitoria Guimaraes SC and free agent Miguel Reisinho. These signings reflect the club’s ambition to strengthen both domestically and on the continental stage.

Under PSL rules, clubs can register up to five foreign players. Sundowns currently have Reisinho, Santos, Marcelo Allende, and Arthur Sales registered. With Ugandan goalkeeper Ismail Watenga not registered, one foreign slot remains available. Coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed this spot will be considered during the January transfer window.

“Of course, we still have one spot for a foreigner, and we will leave for the market in January to see where the team will be and if they need to reinforce,” Cardoso said. “We are very active, not only in the South African market but across Africa. We scout players and teams, analyze them, and the board takes decisions on transfers.”

Sundowns have already loaned Matias Esquivel to AE Kifisia and Abubeker Nasir to AmaTuks. Key players like Peter Shalulile, Denis Onyango, and Divine Lunga remain registered as locals.

The club’s immediate focus is to make an impact in the Premier Soccer League and domestic cups after falling short in the MTN8. The CAF Champions League remains the ultimate prize, with Sundowns having reached the final in the 2025/26 edition before losing to Pyramids. Strengthening their squad with another foreign player could be pivotal for their continental ambitions.

Sundowns’ approach highlights their structured scouting system, led by sporting director Flemming Berg, ensuring any new signing meets both technical and strategic requirements. The January window will be a critical period for Masandawana as they aim to secure both domestic and international success.
