Mamelodi Sundowns Set for First-Ever CAF Clash Against Saint-Eloi Lupopo

Mamelodi Sundowns will kick off their CAF Champions League Group C campaign as the home team against Saint-Eloi Lupopo between November 21 and 23. This marks a unique fixture for the Tshwane-based club as it will be their first-ever meeting with Lupopo in continental competition.
The Brazilians are no strangers to African tournaments. Since their debut in 1994, which saw them defeat Arsenal of Lesotho 1-0, Sundowns have made 19 appearances in the CAF Champions League. Their continental experience also spans the CAF Confederation Cup, African Cup Winners’ Cup, CAF Super Cup, CAF Cup, and the African Football League.
Sundowns have already become the first South African club to surpass 200 games on the continent, reaching this milestone on their way to last season’s Champions League final. Despite this extensive history, Lupopo remains a fresh opponent. The Congolese club, based in Lubumbashi and playing at Stade Frederic Kibassa Maliba, has never faced Sundowns in any CAF competition.
Historically, Sundowns have faced three other clubs from the Democratic Republic of Congo: TP Mazembe, AS Vita, and AS Maniema Union. Matches against Congolese sides have generally been successful for the Chloorkop-based team, with their most recent victory coming against Maniema Union in January.
With the group stage about to begin, Sundowns will aim to continue their strong record against Congolese opposition while navigating this new challenge. Fans will be watching closely to see if the South African giants can maintain their continental dominance and secure a positive start to Group C.
