Stellenbosch FC’s Steve Barker Opens Up About Tough Player Exit Decisions

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has shared a rare look into the difficult choices the club faces when parting ways with players. His comments highlight how loyalty, discipline, opportunity and the long term interests of South African football guide these decisions.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Barker explained that not every departure is the same. Some players leave because of off field concerns. Others move on because they have reached new stages in their careers. Some earn opportunities abroad that the club feels they must support.
He addressed the recent departure of Darrel Matsheke. Barker said the club tried to help the midfielder rebuild his career. Matsheke played an important role in their Carling Knockout success and scored the winning penalty. Barker said the club gave him a lifeline. He said the player showed quality on the field. He also said off field behaviour can make things complicated. He said the club will not accept behaviour that hurts the team. He said this led to the decision to part ways.
Barker said clubs must always think of the team first. He said support has limits. He said there are moments when you must move on. He said these decisions are never taken lightly.
Not every exit is due to discipline. Barker spoke about players who need new challenges. He used Jayden Adams as an example. Adams rose through the DStv Diski Challenge and became an important part of the team. Barker said Adams had achieved all he could at Stellenbosch. He said a move to a new club was the right step. He said the hardest exits are when a player wants to move on and the club would prefer to keep them.
Stellenbosch has built a strong development pathway. That brings pride but also challenges. Young players grow quickly. They attract interest. Some leave before playing many Premiership minutes. Barker said the club always looks for the right timing. He said sometimes the club must think of its own interests. He said the priority is to move players at the right moment.
He highlighted Tylon Smith as one of their success stories. Smith came through the DStv Diski Challenge and earned a transfer to Queens Park Rangers without featuring in the Premiership. Barker said the move was a proud moment. He said it also carried a small sense of wishing they had more time with the player.
He shared the same view on Olwethu Makhanya’s move to MLS. Barker said these opportunities help players grow and help South African football grow. He said players who compete abroad raise the level of the national game. He said this benefits everyone.
Stellenbosch FC continues to balance ambition with development. The club wants to keep its best players. The club also wants to honour new opportunities that support progress. Barker’s comments show the care and thought behind every decision.
