Mamelodi Sundowns Set to Reopen Domestic Campaign with Miguel Cardoso in Charge

Mamelodi Sundowns will resume domestic football with Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso retaining his position on the bench, despite speculation linking Pitso Mosimane to a return. The Brazilians host Orbit College FC at Loftus Versfeld on Monday at 19:30.
The match also marks Cardoso’s 60th game in charge of Sundowns, the longest uninterrupted stretch of his managerial career. The 53-year-old has previously struggled to complete full seasons after pre-season with former clubs, including FC Nantes, AEK Athens, and Esperance, where short stints ended in early exits.
Despite the speculation and criticism, Cardoso’s record at Sundowns remains strong. Out of 59 games, he has secured 36 wins and only six defeats in open play. His achievements include winning the league title and guiding Sundowns to the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2016. His performances in the MTN8, Carling Knockout, and Nedbank Cup were less successful, while the Club World Cup showing was deemed satisfactory.
A win against Orbit College would see Sundowns remain at the top of the standings, although they will have played two games more than Orlando Pirates. The club aims to consolidate its domestic dominance while continuing to compete at continental level under Cardoso’s guidance.
The match represents a key moment for both Cardoso and Sundowns, providing an opportunity to silence critics and reinforce their position as South Africa’s leading football side.
