Mamelodi Sundowns Weigh Late Fitness Call on Denis Onyango Ahead of CAF Champions League Opener

Mamelodi Sundowns face a late decision on Denis Onyango’s availability for their CAF Champions League group stage opener. The goalkeeper picked up an injury while on duty with Uganda in a match against Morocco. He went down in the 65th minute, which raised concern for the club as they prepare for their opening Group C fixture.
Onyango will return to Chloorkop on Friday. The technical team plans to assess him immediately. Sundowns start their group campaign on Saturday at Loftus Stadium against DRC side St Eloi Lupopo.
Cardoso said the club will not rule Onyango out until medical staff complete their checks. He said incidents involving head knocks vary in severity. He added that the club remains in communication with the Ugandan medical team. He said Sundowns will run tests to confirm if the goalkeeper is safe to play.
If Onyango is not cleared, Sundowns have cover in Reyaad Pieterse and Jody February. Pieterse has been training with intensity and featured in a match last weekend. February recently returned to full training after an injury layoff. Both goalkeepers are ready to step in if needed.
Cardoso said the club trusts its goalkeeping department. He said the team has depth, which helps in tight schedules. He added that Pieterse and February understand the demands of the competition.
Sundowns aim to set the tone in Group C with a strong start. The group includes Al Hilal and MC Alger. A win against Lupopo would improve their position before tougher fixtures arrive.
Sundowns want clarity on Onyango’s condition as soon as he lands. The club expects more information after Friday’s tests, which will determine his role for Saturday’s match.
