Orlando Pirates Keep Thabo Moloisane in Sights Amid Defensive Planning

Orlando Pirates continue to track Stellenbosch FC centre-back Thabo Moloisane, despite recent rumours linking Durban City’s Mfanafuthi Mkhize with a potential move to the Soweto giants. Sources indicate that Moloisane remains one of the club’s preferred long-term defensive options.
The Buccaneers are preparing for life after Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who is set to join MLS side Chicago Fire following the Africa Cup of Nations. Pirates are assessing possible replacements to strengthen their backline while also reportedly closing in on Stellenbosch attacking midfielder Andre de Jong. Talks over Moloisane have not been finalised, and a January move is not guaranteed.
Earlier this season, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker acknowledged the possibility of losing Moloisane. He praised the defender for his professionalism, work ethic, and consistent performances, noting that Moloisane had played every game and minute this season. Barker described him as deserving of recognition and suggested he should have been named Defender of the Season.
With Mbokazi having played his final match for Pirates in their recent Carling Knockout Trophy triumph, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will turn to Nkosinathi Sibisi, Lebone Seema, and Olisa Ndah as centre-back options when the team returns from AFCON duty. Thabiso Sesane is progressing in his recovery, while experienced defender Tapelo Xoki is nearing a return following an earlier car accident.
Pirates’ focus on Moloisane reflects their long-term strategy to maintain defensive stability. Combining emerging talent with returning players will be key as the club plans for competitive campaigns following the AFCON break.
