Orlando Pirates Legend Tebogo Moloi Reacts to Thabiso Monyane’s Shock Move to Chiefs

Orlando Pirates have expressed disappointment over the surprise departure of academy graduate Thabiso Monyane, who recently signed for rival Kaizer Chiefs. The move follows the June announcement that Paseka Mako and Monyane would not have their contracts renewed.

While Mako, at 31, sought a new deal as he enters the latter stage of his career, Monyane’s exit has left many puzzled. The club invested heavily in his development from youth level, making the transfer a notable shock.

Club legend Tebogo Moloi, who made 159 appearances for Pirates from the late 1980s to the late 1990s, voiced his surprise. Moloi, part of a delegation of former Pirates captains inducting new signings this season, said such moves were rare and almost taboo in his era.

“Honestly speaking, it is unheard of, or it was taboo back in the days, for a player to move from Chiefs to Pirates or from Pirates to Chiefs,” Moloi said. He referenced Kaizer Motaung as an exception but added that even then, it was unexpected.

Moloi noted the strong development pathway Monyane followed, from Pirates’ U-19s to the Yebo Yes feeder club and ultimately the first team. “I wanted to see him grow with the team as one of our products,” he said. He admitted he does not know all the behind-the-scenes factors but acknowledged that Monyane appears unfazed by the pressure of joining a rival.

Monyane’s move places him among a small group of players who have crossed the fierce Soweto divide, including Marks Maponyane, Sizwe Motaung, and Jimmy Tau. Moloi emphasized the challenge and emotional weight of such a switch, especially for players rooted in the local development system.

The transfer underscores the evolving dynamics of player movement in South African football, highlighting how professional considerations sometimes outweigh historic loyalties and club traditions. Pirates will now look to continue nurturing their academy talent while maintaining competitive strength despite these departures.
