Themba Zwane Looks Ahead to Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Clash with Saint-Eloi Lupopo

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has shared his thoughts ahead of their CAF Champions League Group C opener against Saint-Eloi Lupopo, a Congolese side that recently eliminated Orlando Pirates. Sundowns will host Lupopo at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on 21 November.

Lupopo advanced to the group stage after a dramatic second-round victory over Pirates in a penalty shootout, following a 3-0 defeat in the first leg and a 3-0 win in the return fixture in Orlando. Their performance caught the attention of Sundowns, who will face the team for the first time in continental competition.

Speaking at the official group-stage draw in Johannesburg, Zwane said the team has been studying their opponents closely. “We had an opportunity to watch them against Pirates,” he said. “They are dirty and the tackles were flying, but they put in hard work. We’re going to get time to analyse them so that we know where we can capitalise when we play against them. It’s going to be an exciting game to watch.”

Zwane also provided an update on his fitness. The Tembisa-born midfielder last played competitively in September against Magesi FC in the Betway Premiership. He confirmed that he is close to returning to full action. “I’m feeling good, I’m alright and running without feeling any pain. Now I’m just doing more strengthening so that I can be stronger. I’m looking forward to being back on the pitch,” he said.

Sundowns will be eager to start their group-stage campaign positively, relying on Zwane’s leadership and experience to navigate a challenging fixture against a determined Lupopo side.
