Orlando Pirates’ Ncikazi Reveals Player Riveiro Wanted at Al Ahly

Orlando Pirates coach Mandla Ncikazi has revealed the one Buccaneers player that former coach Jose Riveiro was keen to take with him to Al Ahly earlier this year.
When Riveiro moved from Orlando Stadium to Cairo International Stadium, speculation mounted about which Pirates stars he might target. Names like Relebohile Mofokeng were widely linked to the Egyptian giants. Ncikazi, however, confirmed that Riveiro had his eye on emerging centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
The youngster impressed during the second half of the 2024/25 season, earning plaudits for his performances and composure at a young age. Ncikazi highlighted Mbokazi’s potential and recognition at both club and national levels.
“There’s a good thing that can’t be claimed by one person in our club, there’s a scouting department that’s doing a good job,” Ncikazi told Ukhozi FM. “When you look at the TLB, Mbokazi. It’s scary to see such a young boy at that age, who’s at that level now. Everyone is commending him, Jose wanted him in Egypt. And also, we had a meeting with the Bafana coach Hugo Broos, he says this boy has to go play in Europe.”
Mbokazi’s rise highlights the effectiveness of Pirates’ scouting and youth development system. While Riveiro has left Al Ahly, his interest underscores the centre-back’s growing reputation as a key talent to watch in South African football.
