Marumo Gallants Begin Search for New Coach as PSL Pre-Season Kicks Off

As most DStv Premiership clubs return to action for pre-season preparations, Marumo Gallants find themselves in the spotlight for a different reason—the search for a new head coach.
The Bloemfontein-based outfit has officially confirmed that they are in the process of identifying a replacement following the departure of Moroccan-French tactician Abdeslam Ouaddou, who has now been unveiled as the new head coach of Orlando Pirates.
Ouaddou joined Gallants in March on a short-term deal with an option to extend by two seasons if he managed to save the club from relegation. However, despite an apparent understanding between the two parties, the coach announced his exit at the end of the season, sparking a contractual dispute.
Gallants had initially claimed that Ouaddou had signed a binding two-year agreement and considered taking legal action. But on Monday, club spokesperson Sello Nduna told KickOff.com that the matter had been resolved out of court.
“We’re talking to a number of coaches, but we have not finalised yet. I can confirm that we’re exploring options with various coaches with the aim of appointing someone suitable soon,” Nduna stated.
The coaching vacancy has stirred speculation, with former Upington City coach Brandon Truter revealing he is in discussions with multiple clubs across both the DStv Premiership and the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Truter, known for his previous stints with clubs like Swallows FC and AmaZulu, emphasized that he is focused on the right project rather than financial incentives.
“We’re talking, but nothing is confirmed yet. I don’t want to say who I’m talking to or what the offers are about,” Truter said. “It’s about the project—what the club is trying to build—not the money.”
Gallants are currently the only team in the top division still searching for a head coach, placing urgency on their decision as the new season draws near. With time ticking, the club will be hoping to finalize an appointment swiftly to ensure adequate preparation and squad cohesion ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The upcoming season presents a fresh opportunity for Gallants to reset and rebuild, especially after a year marred by coaching instability and boardroom disputes. Their next move could be pivotal in determining their trajectory in South African football’s top tier.
