The UEFA Champions League made its much-anticipated return last night. PSG beat Real Madrid 1-0 in their first leg last 16 tie.
Striker Kylian Mbappe scored the crucial goal as the hosts take a 1-0 advantage into the second leg in Madrid. The score line would have had more added value had the competition not scrapped the away goals rule.
Lionel Messi had his penalty saved by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the game. However, Mbappe was able to spare the blushes of the striker.
“In matches like this, there is a lot of running.” Mbappe told UEFA.com after the match.
“We have to keep our eyes open for opportunities. We were not lucky enough to score [earlier] but we do now have a slight advantage going into the second leg, so we are happy.”
“Like the entire team, I was in the right rhythm. I tried to help the team as best as I could, to try to be effective in both attack and defence.
“I have been rewarded with this goal and I am very happy.
“We prepare for these big evenings because we dream of this kind of match… we wanted to win, and we were pushed by our supporters. We are very happy with this slight advantage, but there is a return match and the [league to concentrate on before] then.” He confirmed.
