Recap Of The La Liga Weekend. This weekend saw the return of both the Spanish top division and bottom division. Not all the sides played in La Liga’s opening weekend due to European commitments. Every side that participated in the Europa League and UEFA Champions League have an extended break.

La Liga kicked off on Saturday afternoon with a 0-0 draw between Eibar and Celta Vigo. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are all on an extended break as they were involved in European football at the back end of last season.

Valencia is the weekend’s big winners after a stunning 4-2 victory over rivals Levante. Osasuna and Granada also tasted victory in the opening weekend of La Liga.

There is much fanfare about Barcelona this season. Club captain Lionel Messi’s stay will draw in a lot of attention. There is no doubting the influence Messi has on the pitch for Barcelona. It will be intriguing to witness Messi’s application in what seems to be his final season at the club.

Real Madrid will look to retain their Spanish title for the first time in over a decade when they beging their season. Zidane will look to Hazard to have a better season than last season. Stalwarts Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema will look to be the Los Blancos’ catalysts once again.

Atletico Madrid will hope to tighten the gap on the top two. The 2014 champions have a strong squad. The young Joao Felix will have a lot on his shoulders as Diego Simeone’s men will look to the Portuguese international for inspiration.
