Head coach Stuart Baxter wants his players to be credited for their hard work in reaching the CAF Champions League final. The Scot took to the bench for the very first time since be reappointed as the club coach.
Stuart Baxter watched on as his side was humbled by Al Ahly. The Egyptians hold much more pedigree in high stake competitions.
Kaizer Chiefs learned extremely difficult lessons on Saturday night.
“The lads did unbelievably well to get to where we are now to this final, so I think once the obvious disappointment of the defeat has settled, I think they will get the credit they deserve.” Baxter said in the post-match press conference.
“Of course, you’re disappointed, massively disappointed. The players in the dressing room are massively disappointed.
“I thought with the challenges that we’ve had building up to the final, the players did really well. The opening of the game, we pressed high, but al Ahly were good with the ball.
“I thought we did that reasonably well, but we had less and less of our attacks,” he added, as he looked back at the match.
The Kaizer Chiefs squad will take great pride in reaching the CAF Champions League final for the very first time in their history. Defeating a time of Al Ahly’s calibre was always going to be an extremely difficult task.
Now, with the experience of African football, they have a great foundation to build on. Especially as they are now able to participate in the transfer window.
