Orlando Pirates’ Rotation Policy Boosts Title Hopes Under Abdeslam Ouaddou

Orlando Pirates are enjoying a strong run of form, and statistics suggest head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s rotation strategy could be key to ending the club’s 14-year league title drought.

Early in the season, Ouaddou faced criticism for not relying on a fixed starting eleven. The Soweto giants suffered consecutive Betway Premiership defeats to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants, prompting questions over his team selection.

Unlike his predecessor Jose Riveiro, Ouaddou has resisted sticking to a core group of players, instead rotating the squad regularly. This approach has increased competition within the team, contributing to Pirates’ current five-game winning streak in the league.

Statistics show the extent of this rotation. Sipho Mbule, currently on Bafana Bafana duty, has played just 31 percent of available minutes across all competitions, while Thalente Mbatha, also with the national team, has featured in 42 percent. Patrick Maswanganyi has appeared in 45 percent of total minutes.

Former Pirates winger Lebohang Mokoena praised the strategy, saying it addresses a problem the club faced in previous seasons. “I think they are in for a good season. I believe they can go all the way and actually win the league because they have the depth. There are still other players who haven’t played, which are quality. So, I think that’s what lacked in the previous seasons, where you keep on playing the same line-up, so I’m seeing him rotating players and they still perform. It shows that players are feeling the competition,” Mokoena said on iDiski Dine YouTube Channel.

Captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi leads outfield players in minutes, featuring in 91 percent of total play, missing only the second-leg CAF Champions League preliminary round game against Lioli FC. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has played 95 percent of total minutes, with his only substitution coming shortly after half-time against Lioli.

Ouaddou’s rotation policy has allowed the squad to maintain freshness and manage workloads, ensuring that key players are fit for critical fixtures. The depth of talent and strong performances from rotated players have raised optimism that Pirates could challenge for the league title this season.
