Terrence Mashego’s Future at Mamelodi Sundowns in Doubt

Terrence Mashego’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns is once again under scrutiny, with indications that the club may be open to letting the South African left-back move on.

The 29-year-old impressed at the recent CHAN tournament, demonstrating his quality and resilience despite a stop-start spell at Chloorkop. His performances reminded fans and analysts of his capabilities on the international stage.

Back at Sundowns, competition for the left-back position has intensified. The club recently signed Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC, adding to existing options Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga. This leaves Mashego further down the pecking order.

Reports suggest Kaizer Chiefs expressed interest in Mashego during the January transfer window, though Sundowns reportedly rejected the approach at the time. With Basadien now in the squad, there is speculation that Sundowns may reconsider if fresh offers arrive.

“Terrence is a top player, but it’s tough for him at Sundowns right now. With so many left-backs, it’s natural he’ll look at what’s best for his career. Yes, they (Chiefs) had interest before, and other clubs are watching closely,” a source close to the situation said.

Several Betway Premiership clubs are monitoring developments. Stellenbosch, TS Galaxy, and Chippa United are among the potential destinations, whether on loan or via a permanent deal.

Mashego joined Sundowns in 2022 after establishing himself as one of Cape Town City’s most consistent performers. Injuries and strong competition for places have limited his impact in a squad known for its depth and international talent.

At 29, Mashego will be seeking regular playing time to maintain his career trajectory and capitalize on his form at the CHAN tournament. Clubs across the Premiership are expected to evaluate opportunities to secure his services in the coming transfer windows.
