Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Al Hilal in their CAF Champions League opener over the weekend. Head coach Rulani Mokwena is salivating over the prospect of the use of VAR in the tournament.
Ever since Patrice Motsepe was voted CAF President, he has sworn to try as much as he can to spread the use of VAR across all African competitions. We have seen this in AFCON before.
Now, the next step is to implement it in the CAF Champions League and in the CAF Confederations Cup. From the quarterfinal stages, the tournaments will have VAR.
“We know that VAR will come into the quarterfinals and that will assist, but I am just very pleased with the performance today. Apart from looking at that goal, the performance today I thought was very good and we deserved three points today I think.” Mokwena told the media after the game.
The coach also added that they are aiming to reach 10 points, as this is likely to guarantee passage into the next round of Africa’s biggest club competition.
“First, it’s to get three points, the target is to move as close as possible to ten. History tells you that the lowest number of points to come out of the group stages is 4.
“But we want to try to get us as close as possible to 10 points because that guarantees you more or less a position in the knockouts and so three points regardless of the score line is very important [and] a clean sheet.” He spoke.
