Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Mbule Reflects on Season-Opening Loss to Sekhukhune United

Orlando Pirates began their Betway Premiership campaign with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune United on Saturday. The defeat followed a confident win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinals, making the setback a harsh return to reality for the Buccaneers.
New signing Sipho Mbule, who started his second consecutive game for Pirates, gave a candid assessment of the match. Mbule, previously with SuperSport United, admitted that the team’s overall performance fell short.
“I think our first match wasn’t that great,” Mbule said in an interview with the club’s media team. “We played in patches; there were some chances we created, but we weren’t clinical enough. It’s definitely a bad start for us, but it’s also something we can learn from.”
Mbule highlighted that while Pirates maintained control in parts of the game, Sekhukhune United managed to capitalize on a rare opportunity. “We told ourselves that nobody is going to come here to Orlando and dominate us. Of course, they didn’t dominate us, but they got one chance and capitalised on it,” he explained.
The midfielder emphasized the need for the team to analyze their mistakes and improve quickly. “For us, it’s about going back to the drawing board, reviewing the game, and seeing where we can improve,” Mbule added.
The Buccaneers have limited time to regroup as they prepare to face Marumo Gallants at Dr Molemela Stadium on Tuesday at 19:30. Mbule and his teammates will aim to bounce back quickly to maintain their competitiveness in the league.
This early-season loss serves as a warning for Pirates. Their ability to adapt and strengthen will be crucial as they pursue silverware and aim to improve on last season’s results. Mbule’s honesty and focus on learning from mistakes show a team willing to grow despite early setbacks.
