After losing 2-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk last week, Real Madrid fell out of the top 2 qualifying positions. They needed a win to guarantee qualification.
A win is exactly what they got.
“It was the last game and we had the chance to finish top and the team managed to do so. Every player on the pitch, from start to finish, showed character.” He told the press after the game.
“They showed their quality and I’m very pleased for them.”
Karim Benzema particular stood out in the game.
“Karim impresses me but it’s no surprise. We know what he can do. We never know if he is a number 9 or a 10. He always does amazing things and that is great for a manager”.
Zidane was under real pressure before playing against Sevilla on Saturday. But a then then and a win now leaves his side in good confidence as they prepare to play Atletico Madrid.
Atletico are currently top of the table. Zidane says that pressure is just part of the Real Madrid job.
“You can perform with or without pressure. There’s no such thing as no pressure here though. We know we can’t play brilliantly in every game.” He said.
“That’s the problem, when you’re in this team; they always expect you to play well. We try but it can’t always be the case.
“Sometimes you have to dig in; there are always ups and downs.” Zidane added.
Victory means that Real Madrid is the only team to qualify through to 24 consecutive knockout rounds in the UEFA Champions League.
They will know who they are playing on Monday when the knockout round draw is set to be hosted.
