Daine Klate: A PSL Phenomenon

Daine Klate: A PSL Phenomenon! Daine Klate is a PSL phenomenon, as he remains the only player to win 5 consecutive ABSA Premiership titles.

The supreme winger was a consistent fixture in Gavin Hunt’s Supersport side that won three consecutive titles between 2008 and 2010. Klate then switched to Orlando Pirates, winning back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

After this other worldly achievement, Klate was dubbed by many as a PSL phenomenon. A strongly left sided player, Daine Klate, in his trademark manner, hugged the touchline, posing a remarkable threat to opposition defenders as Supersport United won 3 consecutive league titles.
In an uncanny transfer to Orlando Pirates, it’s as if Klate new the destination of the 2010/2011 Absa Premiership season.

Klate was an ever present in a Pirates side that ended an 8 year trophy drought since last winning the league title in the early 2000’s. Back in the days of Lesley Manyathela. They did this by beating Moroka Swallows on penalties to claim the MTN 8 in the Moses Mabhida stadium. This was followed by the ABSA Premiership and Nedbank Cup.

The following season, Benni McCarthy joined the champions. With Tlou Segolela on one side, Daine Klate on the other; Benni McCarthy and Tokelo Rantie upfront, Klate was in a fabulous side that won the 2011/2012 ABSA Premiership, sealing his 5th consecutive title.

He remains the most decorated player in PSL history, with 6 PSL titles, overtaking Andre Arendse. His last came with Gavin Hunt and Wits University in the 2016/2017 season.

The only blip in Klate’s career is that his international career doesn’t compete with his domestic achievements. In 2010, Klate was voted the best player of the 2009/2010 ABSA Premiership season, prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Despite this individual accolade, Klate surprisingly failed to make the final 23-man squad to represent Bafana Bafana at the world showpiece.
