Zuko Mdunyelwa Set for More Game Time at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns right back Zuko Mdunyelwa’s situation at the club has shifted, giving him a clear chance to cement his place in the team.

Mdunyelwa, 26, was previously linked with a potential exit as several clubs showed interest. However, the injury to Thapelo Morena and the contractual uncertainty surrounding Khuliso Mudau have forced Sundowns to rely on Mdunyelwa more this season.

Though there were talks about a loan move, chances of that happening have decreased as Sundowns need depth in the right-back position. Mdunyelwa has already featured twice this season, appearing in both the MTN8 and Betway Premiership competitions.

Last season, Mdunyelwa made just seven appearances across all competitions. Speaking to Sundowns media at the start of the current campaign, he expressed gratitude for the support from teammates. “It’s a great feeling and I really appreciate it. I appreciate the support I have been getting from my teammates. They are pushing me,” he said.

Sundowns dropped points in their season opener, drawing 1-1 away to Chippa United. Mdunyelwa came on as a second-half substitute for Fawaaz Basadien and admitted the team did not fully execute their game plan. “I felt like we didn’t apply ourselves the way we wanted, and we didn’t carry out the game plan for the opposition. Other than that, it was great being in my home province playing against my former club in a city I used to live in,” he reflected.

The team now aims to bounce back when they host AmaZulu at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday evening. Mdunyelwa said the squad is working on tactical adjustments to exploit AmaZulu’s weaknesses and neutralise their strengths.

He identified key AmaZulu players to watch out for, including Pule Ekstein, Riaad Hanamub, Bongani Zungu, defender Fielies, and Sandile Mthethwa.

Mdunyelwa’s increased involvement could be crucial for Sundowns as they chase success in the 2025/26 season.
