AmaZulu finished second in the DSTV Premiership last season. This means that they have finished in their highest ever league position, and allowing them to enter the continental stage.
CAF only allows each association (league) two teams into the Champions League. So in this instance it would be Mamelodi Sundowns (champions) and AmaZulu (second).
However, 8th placed Kaizer Chiefs are in the semi-finals of this year’s competition. Should the Glamour Boys win the coveted trophy, they too would be guaranteed entry into next season’s CAF Champions League as defending champions.
Thus, possibly shutting out AmaZulu.
“They (CAF) may extend the spots‚ it depends on what the CAF Competitions Committee decides‚” SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe told Sowetan Live.
“Remember that as a country currently we have two Champions League spots‚ and you can’t close Chiefs out if they win the tournament because there must be a defending champion.
“But at the same time you can’t also prejudice AmaZulu because it is a written rule that number two qualifies for the tournament,” he added.
“We used to have three spots. They may decide to have three again‚ depending on the circumstances.” He concluded.
Should Amakhosi win the CAF Champions League, AmaZulu will be in jeopardy of participating in the CAF Confederations Cup rather. AmaZulu’s CAF Champions League Destiny in the Hands of Kaizer Chiefs!
