Bradley Cross Overcame Injury Setback to Shine at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs defender Bradley Cross could have taken a very different career path if not for an untimely injury during a trial in the United States. In 2022, fresh from leaving Newcastle United, Cross was assessed by Chiefs, but the club decided against signing him at the time due to fitness concerns. What was less known was that he had just returned from a trial with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy, which ended abruptly on the first day.
Speaking on Diski Dads episode 5, Cross’s father, Paul, revealed how the setback unfolded. “Bradley did travel to America to do trials. LA Galaxy, I think. He got there on the first day of training, went into a 50-50 tackle, and pulled his knee out. That’s how the injury came about,” he explained. Specialists assessed the injury and estimated an eight-to-ten-week recovery. The trial ended immediately, and Cross was sent home, with the club unable to continue evaluating him until he fully recovered.
The injury not only halted his MLS opportunity but also affected his immediate prospects with Kaizer Chiefs. Cross had to rebuild his career through perseverance and determination, earning his place in South African football through stints at Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows. These experiences allowed him to regain fitness, develop consistency, and prove his ability at the top-flight level.
Eventually, Cross signed for Kaizer Chiefs, where he has since become a key figure in the defensive line. His journey highlights resilience and the importance of patience in professional football, showing that setbacks can be stepping stones when approached with dedication. Today, Cross combines experience, tactical awareness, and leadership, making him a vital part of Chiefs’ defensive setup.
