George Lebese Congratulates Mduduzi Shabalala on Bafana Bafana Debut

Former Kaizer Chiefs star George Lebese has praised rising talent Mduduzi Shabalala after the young midfielder made his first appearance for Bafana Bafana under coach Hugo Broos. Shabalala, affectionately known as ‘Mdu’ or ‘Die’, featured as a substitute in South Africa’s 3-0 victory over Rwanda in Mbombela, concluding a successful 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The 21-year-old midfielder had previously impressed at the 2025 COSAFA Cup and was a late addition to Broos’ squad, replacing the injured Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates. Despite joining the national team late, Shabalala was given the opportunity to showcase his abilities on the international stage.
Lebese, who earned six caps for Bafana Bafana and played for both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, shared a heartfelt message congratulating Shabalala.
“Congratulations! You’re now part of a special group that made history by reaching the World Cup – that’s something no one can ever take away from you. Be proud, embrace every moment and the journey. You’ve earned your spot, so stand tall and make the most of this experience,” Lebese wrote.
Shabalala’s debut came as Bafana Bafana dominated the match, with Evidence Makgopa scoring the third goal in the 72nd minute. Broos’ decision to introduce Shabalala provided the midfielder with a memorable milestone in his young career.
The debut highlights Shabalala’s steady rise through the ranks and reflects the growing depth of South Africa’s national team. With the World Cup on the horizon, the youngster now has the chance to gain invaluable experience and establish himself as a key contributor to Bafana Bafana.
